Minnesota Orchestra details Cuba trip schedule

The Minnesota Orchestra has announced the full schedule for its May trip to Cuba, which includes a pair of performances in Havana as part of the International Cubadisco Festival.

On May 14, orchestra musicians will visit a Cuban high school and university to meet with music students, offer master classes and individual coaching. The next day, the orchestra will play a side-by-side rehearsal with a youth symphony, followed by an evening performance of three Beethoven works with the Cuban National Choir. On May 16, the orchestra will wrap up the trip with a concert featuring selections from “West Side Story” and Sergei Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” followed by a late-night jazz performance with Cuban musicians at the Havana Cafe.

The tour will include 165 people, including 100 musicians, stage crew, staff and community members. They will be packing 65 tour trunks weighing more than 4 tons.

The Minnesota Orchestra will become the first U.S. orchestra to perform in Cuba since President Barack Obama announced steps to restore relations with the communist nation.
